Closer Brandon Lyon surrendered three earned runs on six hits in one third of an inning, blowing the save in a 5-4 loss to the Phillies on Friday (4/1/11) afternoon. Lyon entered the game with a two-run lead, but gave up six hits -- all singles -- in a 30-pitch performance. Considering manager Brad Mills never had another reliever warming up, Lyon's job appears secure for now.

The Braves placed Jurrjens on the disabled list Sunday (4/3/11) and recalled Mike Minor, who is scheduled to start Wednesday's game in Milwaukee. If Jurrjens is able to make his expected return on April 16 against the Mets, this would be the only start Minor would make before returning to Triple-A Gwinnett. While Jurrjens believed he would be ready make his start Wednesday, the Braves didn't want to send him to the mound before he could test himself in a competitive Minor League setting. He has thrown just one inning since completing six against the Mets on March 18. That lone frame came on March 24, when discomfort in his right side forced him to exit. Jurrjens completed a bullpen session on Sunday morning, and he is now targeted to pitch a simulated game with Gwinnett on Wednesday. If all goes well, the 25-year-old's final test will come April 11, when he'll pitch five or six innings for Gwinnett against Norfolk, Va.

Making his first start for the Diamondbacks, right-hander Armando Galarraga gave up four earned runs, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five over seven inning of a win over the Cubs.
With a snowout last Sunday in Denver, manager Kirk Gibson had the option to skip Galarraga in the rotation. Good thing he didn't. Galarraga didn't allow his first hit until the fourth inning and saved the D-backs from a sweep. His next start comes at home on April 12 against the Cardinals, a team that looks lost at the plate right now.

Angels closer Fernando Rodney blew his first save of the season Sunday (4/3/11), allowing two earned runs on one hit and three walks over one-third of an inning against the Royals.
Rodney simply couldn't find his control in the brief outing, throwing only seven of 20 pitches for strikes. The 33-year-old blew seven of 21 save opportunities a year ago and has looked shaky in each of his first two appearances this season.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia doesn't know how long it will last, but Jordan Walden is his new closer.
The young gun replaces veteran Fernando Rodney, who will try to find what's been missing in a bullpen role with less impact. Walden appeared in three of the four games in Kansas City, going 2 1/3 scoreless innings and giving up one hit and one walk while striking out five. He was dominant this spring. "If it lasts all season and Jordan takes off and runs with it, fine," Scioscia said. "If it's Fernando, that's fine, too. We don't have to answer that today."

New Angels closer Jordan Walden tossed a scoreless ninth inning on Tuesday (4/5/11), striking out one to convert his first save chance of the season.
That makes six strikeouts in 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the young right-hander. Manager Mike Scioscia hinted that the move isn't permanent, but if Walden keeps it up he may never let go of the job.
In other news Edwin Jackson has started with a good outing in his first turn through the White Sox rotation. Placido Polanco has shaken off his elbow issues and hitting like the 2-spot hitter we all know he is for the Phillies. Johnny Damon is struggling out of the gate with Tampa Bay hitting only 0.067 so far as a DH for the Rays, although he has seen some time at 1st base as well. See the "WATN Player Trends" page to see which direction these guys are going, and remember to look at the "Where Are They Now? (2011)" page for full stats on the former Tigers.
That's it for now. GO TIGERS! ---Rob
