Verlander and Cabrera "Off the Charts"

Kirk Gibson comes to Detroit.
Welcome back sports fans!  This weekend we celebrate some of the 1984 World Series Tigers returning to Detroit for the Sparky Anderson Number Retirement Ceremony.  However Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell are not returning solely for the ceremony.  They bring the National League West leading Arizona Diamondbacks into town.  Gibby has managed them to a slim lead in the NL West over the 2010 World Champion San Francisco Giants with Alan Trammell as his bench coach.

Since our last report the Tigers have managed to complete a series sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays by beating them in Detroit for the first two games in May, and finishing them off with a win on June 13th for the rain postponed final game.  The Tigers moved on to take 2 of 3 from Cleveland in Comerica Park grabbing a temporary hold on first place in the AL Central before heading on the road.  Currently Cleveland is back out front again by a game, mostly due to the Tigers National League rules games played on the road trips to Colorado and Los Angeles where they dropped both series to the Rockies and the Dodgers losing 2 of 3 to each team.  Even though the Tigers record was 2-4 on the road trip, there have been some highlights, and returning from the road trip has triggered some roster changes as well.

First the roster changes (see Regular Season 2011 page).  Brandon Inge returns the the lineup at 3rd base after his rehab stint in Toledo following his bout with mono.  Ryan Perry also returns to the bullpen after spending most of June in AAA Toledo working on his control issues.  Danny Worth (although some wonder why it wasn't Ryan Raburn) heads back to Toledo to make room for Inge.  Worth was hitting well until the road trip, and only managed to hit .111 (1 for 9) on the trip even though he had hit .400 (8 for 20) to date before then.  Adam Wilk leaves for Toledo as well to make room for Ryan Perry in the bullpen.  Wilk has had a very good showing with the Tigers, and side-by-side he's posted better numbers than Perry walking only 1 hitter over 10 and 2/3 innings with 8 strikeouts to Perry's 9 walks in 10 and 1/3 innnings with 10 strikeouts.  The Tigers prefer Perry's higher strikeout per inning ratio if he can maintain his control.  So Perry's return is Wilk's undoing, since the Tigers needed another right-hander in the pen and Wilk becomes the victim of too many left-handers.
Justin Verlander - Cy Young year?
The road trip saw some dismal hitting from some batters and dismal pitching from most of the pitching staff.  As mentioned Worth went 1 for 9, but also the other utility infielder Ramon Santiago is in a slump as well going only 6 for 44 in June and 0 for 9 on the road trip.  Andy Dirks slumped as well getting only 3 hits in 15 at bats.  Every pitcher on the team with only two exceptions had issues in the National League Ballparks during the trip as well.  If it weren't for Al Alburquerque and Justin Verlander the road record may well have been worse than 2-4.   There were some highlights, both pitching and hitting that made some of the loses close and got the Tigers their two wins.

Miguel Cabrera - top of the charts.
Justin Verlander pitched another gem for his 2nd complete game in a row, and Miguel Cabrera along with Brennan Boesch continue to hit and hit well.  The Tigers are also getting some timely hitting from utility outfielder Casper Wells who has hit some key home runs lately, and Magglio Ordonez is back in the lineup and showing signs his bat is coming back as lethal as it has ever been.  Tigers hitting should improve now that they are back home with the ability to put the DH back in the lineup.  Miguel Cabrerra has managed to hit himself to the top of the leader boards in the American League and lately has been... literally..  "Off the Chart" he's hitting so well! (See the Hitter Trends Chart.)   Justin Verlander has done the same thing, having the best year of his career.. and is on track for a Cy Young season this year leading in several American League Pitching categories and pushing his numbers off the top of the pitching chart! (See Pitcher Trends Chart.)

The Inter-league play continues for the Tigers with the  Diamondbacks in town for a three game series over the weekend followed by an American League makeup game against the Toronto Blue Jays. They finish out Inter-league play with the NY Mets bringing rumored trade players shortstop Jose Reyes and thirdbaseman David Wright into town for a mid-week three game series, finishing with the Diamondbacks "nemesis", the SF Giants for a three game series over the 4th of July weekend.

Will the Tigers try to get Reyes in a trade before the July deadline.. perhaps to play 2nd base?  Stayed tuned.. there should be a VERY good 2nd half of the season coming up.

Former Tigers doing well for Yankees, Rays, and Oakland

Scott Sizemore is hitting .375 with Oakland, Johnny Damon is leading off and hitting well for the Rays and former Tiger Matt Joyce is still hitting .330 (even hurt) for Tampa Bay as well.  Curtis Granderson is second in the American League hitting 20 home runs for the Yankees.

Below are summaries for recent activity involving these and other former Tiger players courtesy of "MLB Fantasy Baseball News"...

June 9, 2011 at 10:28 PM ET

Braves starter Jair Jurrjens improved to 8-2 on Thursday after holding the Marlins to two earned runs on six hits and no walks and striking out two over seven innings.

Despite registering only 46 strikeouts in 79 innings, Jurrjens has a 1.82 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and has registered a quality start every time he has stepped on the mound this season.

June 5, 2011 at 12:12 PM ET

Rays closer Kyle Farnsworth recorded a strikeout in a 1-2-3 ninth inning on Saturday against
the Mariners to earn his 11th save of the season.

The 35-year-old entered the 2011 campaign with the reputation of a reliever with good stuff but didn't have the makeup of a closer. Farnsworth has proved the doubters wrong so far as he's 11-for-12 in save opportunities to go with a 1.35 ERA. He's also making quick work of opponents as indicated by a stellar 0.75 WHIP, which includes just one walk in 20 innings of work.

June 11, 2011 at 1:54 AM ET

White Sox starter Edwin Jackson was solid across six two-run innings in a no-decision vs. the A's on Friday, giving up eight hits and a walk while striking out one.

Jackson exited the game with a 5-2 lead after six frames, hoping to pick up his first win since May 22. But the bullpen allowed four runs to cross in the ninth inning and the right-hander was denied win No. 5. Jackson has been decent in his last seven outings, with four and six-run clunkers mucking up five strong starts. The 27-year-old hurler will try for his third straight quality start at Minnesota in his next appearance slated for June 16.

June 9, 2011 at 3:40 AM ET

Astros reliever Brandon Lyon, who's been on the DL since May 5 with tendinitis in his right biceps and a partial tear in his rotator cuff, was activated after Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Cardinals at Minute Maid Park.

In a a corresponding roster move, right-hander Jose Valdez was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City. "I'm feeling a lot better," said Lyon, who pitched two innings in a Minor League rehab stint at Oklahoma City. "I got a couple of outings down there and recovered well. I felt good today after throwing [on Tuesday]. It's about time to get back out there." Manager Brad Mills said that Lyon will return to the closer's role, but not right away. Mark Melancon has been closing games since Lyon blew a save on May 4 in Cincinnati. Lyon is 3-2 with a 7.15 ERA in 12 games this year, with four saves in eight chances. He went 20-for-22 in save chances last year after Matt Lindstrom lost the job.

June 12, 2011 at 5:41 PM ET

Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs on Sunday against the Indians.

Granderson has been on a roll over the last four games, as he's belted five extra-base hits and driven in six runs. The 29-year-old is slugging a whopping .611 this season.

June 10, 2011 at 10:40 PM ET

Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco 1-for-3 with a grand slam and walk in Friday's defeat of the Cubs.

Polanco smacked his first big fly since May 23, pushing his OPS up to .754. That mark makes him a top tier third baseman in National League formats.

June 13, 2011 at 9:26 PM ET

Leadoff is not a place many designated hitters call home, but Rays manager Joe Maddon moved Johnny Damon to the No. 1 spot in the order early in this 11-game road trip, and the move has proven successful.

Since moving to the top of the batting order, Damon was hitting .325 (13-for-40) entering Monday and is giving more RBI opportunities to the heart of the Rays' lineup. Damon has been a leadoff hitter for the majority of his career. But since coming to Tampa Bay, he had been second or third in the lineup with faster guys leading off. "He's been great," Maddon said. "Good leadoff at-bats, he's been grinding it out. He really sets a good example for the rest of the lineup. On top of that, the bottom has given him enough RBI opportunities, too, which I really want."

June 13, 2011 at 10:00 PM ET

The Padres made a number of roster moves on Monday, which featured the return of center fielder Cameron Maybin.

Maybin, who hadn't played since May 27 while suffering through right knee inflammation, said he felt no pain in his knee during the rehab assignment and doesn't expect to limited in his return. The Padres outfielder -- batting .254 with five dingers, 15 RBIs and seven steals in 50 games -- is a solid option.

June 12, 2011 at 11:34 PM ET

Giants first baseman Aubrey Huff went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Sunday's win over the Reds.

It's just the second time Huff has plated a run since his big three-homer, six-RBI game on June 2. The 34-year-old is batting .234 on the season with eight home runs and 34 RBIs.

June 6, 2011 at 6:27 PM ET

The cavalry arrived Monday for the Dodgers, who activated three players from the disabled list and called up top shortstop prospect Dee Gordon.

Also activated were infielder Juan Uribe and outfielder Marcus Thames, both starting Monday night against the Phillies, and reliever Blake Hawksworth. To make room for the four players, the Dodgers designated for assignment outfielder Jay Gibbons and infielder Juan Castro and optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque infielder Ivan De Jesus and pitcher John Ely.

June 11, 2011 at 10:25 PM ET

After missing Friday night's game against the Orioles due to soreness in his left shoulder, Matt Joyce was back in the lineup and hitting third on Saturday night.

Joyce experienced a lot of soreness in the shoulder from a cortisone shot he had on Thursday. Joyce entered Saturday night's action hitting .338 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs. But he was just 8-for-40 in his last 11 games -- some of which can be attributed to his cooling down a little and some to him becoming a marked man in the Rays' lineup due to his success.

June 11, 2011 at 2:01 AM ET

A's infielder Scott Sizemore went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a walk against the White Sox on Friday.

Sizemore delivered in a big way for the A's by clearing the bases his go-ahead three-run double in the ninth inning. Called up to improve inconsistencies at third base on June 6, the 26-year-old has five hits in nine at-bats in three games. He's batting .264 in 20 games this season.

Tigers beat Chicago and Texas on the Road.. home again.

The Tigers won 2 series in a row on the road beating the Chicago White Sox 2 of 3 and the Texas Rangers 2 of 3.  The Tigers have now won 8 of their last 10 and host the hot Seattle Mariners for a 4 game series in Comerica Park this weekend followed by a makeup game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.  After the Rays game the Tigers fate is in their own hands when they host the 1st place Cleveland Indians for a 3 game series starting June 14th before hitting the road again for inter-league play against the Rockies and Dodgers.  The following weekend Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell return to Detroit when the Arizona Diamondbacks come to town for a series ending with the Sparky Anderson Number Retirement Ceremony on Sunday, June 26th.

The Tigers have been hitting well and pitching well in the 8 of 10 win streak.  See the Regular Season page for current numbers.  Also take a look at the Hitter Trends page.   Brennan Boesch is getting his swing back (5 of 6 in a game against Texas), and Danny Worth is hitting .429 at this point in his fill-in role at the infield positions while Brandon Inge is out sick.  Andy Dirks is starting to slip in the hitting department but did hit his 3rd home run against the Rangers in only 50 at-bats.  The Pitcher Trends page is updated as well.   Adam Wilk and Charlie Furbush continue to throw good innings out of the bullpen, and Phil Coke made a very rocky return from the DL in the recent loss to the Rangers.

That's it for a mid-week update.  Stay tuned this weekend for a full review and another look at former Tiger players including Matt Joyce for the first time. (Is his hitting for real, or just because he never faces left-handed pitching?)

Tigers Sweep Minnesota.. and back on the road again.

The Tigers recovered from a 3-loss series against the Red Sox to win 4 straight games last week culminating with a sweep of the Minnesota Twins in Detroit.  Next they face some good hitting teams on the road in the Chicago White Sox and the Texas Rangers before coming home again to face the Seattle Mariners for a 4-game series spanning next weekend.
David Purcey posted good numbers with Oakland.
There have been big changes in the Tigers Roster since last week.  Struggling right-handed reliever Ryan Perry was sent down to Toledo when lefty starter Andy Oliver came up to take Phil Coke's rotation spot.  The new left-handed reliever David Purcey acquired in the trade with Oakland for Scott Sizemore started in the bullpen replacing Adam Wilk.  Wilk was sent back to AAA Toledo after making a really nice Major League debut with the Tigers.  A last minute illness to Brandon Inge sent him to the disabled list (DL) and catcher Omir Santos was recalled to hold a roster spot until Magglio Ordonez returns to the lineup next week. (See the hitters section of the Regular Season 2011 page.)  Fortunately Danny Worth who was brought up to fill in at 2nd base when Sizemore was traded also plays 3rd base and will cover 3rd along with Don Kelly while Inge is out.  Inge was struggling at the bottom of the hitter trends along with Ryan Raburn, and had just started to hit when illness cut his recovery short.
Inge sick with mononucleosis.

Struggling hitters on the team are Brandon Inge mentioned above (who will be out of the lineup for at least 2 weeks) and Ryan Raburn.  Raburn has only hit 4 for 30 (.133) in his last 10 games, but the good news is that 3 of those 4 hits have come in his last 3 games where Raburn is 3 for 12 (.250).  Raburn's batting average for the season bottomed out at .195 and is currently .199.  The other hitter to watch is Brennan Boesch.  Boesch started the season matching Cabrerra and Peralta in hitting, but has been on a long slide down for the entire month of May (See Hitter Trends).  The Tigers will really need Boesch's left handed power during the second half of the season.  We will have to watch and see if he turns it around.

The surprise of the season has got to be Jhonny Peralta however.  Peralta is the 2nd best hitter on the team at the moment behind Miguel Cabrerra.  Peralta is hitting .324 and has hit .471 in the last 10 games.  He is so hot he is giving Cabrerra a run for the money as the best hitter on the team.

Improvement in the bullpen has helped the Tigers with winning the last game against Boston, and sweeping the Twins.  The biggest improvement has been in the play of Joaquin Benoit (See Pitcher Trends).  Another surprise has been in the play of Charlie Furbush.  Furbush actually posted numbers that put him ahead of Justin Verlander for the best pitcher on the team as of the June 1st "ADJ OBA" rankings (See Trends page).  New pitcher David Purcey is also holding his own in his first few outings with the Tigers.  Other good news is that for the first time this season, besides a tough outing by Max Scherzer, NONE of the Tiger pitchers are trending down.   Scherzer will be the one to watch to see if he's recovered from some control problems during his last outing.  Max has gone 0-2 in his last 4 outings, and his ERA has gone up almost 2 full points in those last 4 games.  Max will have to improve.

That's the report for this week.  Watch for the Tigers to struggle a bit against Chicago and Texas particularly if the Tigers start left-handed pitching against these two good hitting teams.
